Koeji Castle Ruins and Koeji Pond

Uenaegi is located at the eastern end of Fukuoka , Nakatsugawa City , Gifu Prefecture , and the village is located in a hilly area at an alititude of 390m , which is one step higher than the location of the government office . It is said to be the site of the construction of Koeji Castle in the Kamakura period. In an era when only people and horses passed , there was an old road that passed west of Koeji Pond and led to Hida via Pebble Mound, and an old road that led to Kiso via Sakashita. In the past years , many people came and went as the main roads , and it was a key point where the east-west and north-south roads intersected.
In this way , Uenaegi is an extermly interesting area in history , and Kagetomo Toyama , who became the owner of Iwamura Castle , set up castles in various places to defend. Then around 1333 , Koeji Castle was established in this area as a solidification of the area on the north bank of the Kiso River.
Toyama family was upset when the Toki clan was involved in the Onin War , so he consolidated the castles in various places for his defense. Koeji Castle was relocated around 1526 when Takamori (Naegi , Nakatsugawa City) was selected and relocated as a more favarable terrain.
