At the time of Tenpo,Genka , there was a Jizo-do around here , and villagers
deeply worshiped it. The Jizo-do was destroyed by the abolition of Buddha
in the early Meiji era , and the Buddaha statues along the road were also
masonry or buried in the ground and disappered without a trace. Time has
passed , and when a plague spread around here , rumors spread that it was
due to the Buddha statues being buried. Therefore , the local people dug
up the stone Buddha statues all together , collected them in this place
, and placed them there. All thirty-three bodies have scars , which clearly
shows how severe the abolition of Buddha was carried out at that time.
It is regretable that the stone Buddha statues were not systematically
placed at the time of enshrining. The sitting statue of Kobo Daishi in the center was unharmed because it was hidden in the attic of the farmhouse , and it is said that it was later enshrined here. It is also reported that there was an approach from Henkoji Temple on a straight line passing through Namuamidabutsumyogoto Tower. |
