Koeji Castle Ruins and Koeji Pond

Uenaegi is located at the eastern end of Fukuoka , Nakatsugawa City , Gifu Prefecture and the village is located in a hilly area at an altitude of 390m , which is one step higher than the location of the goverment office. It is said to be the site of the construction of Koeji Castel during the Kamakura period. In the era of only human and horses , there were old roads that pass west of Koeji Pond and lead to Hida via Pebble Mound , and old roads that lead to Kiso via Sakashita. It was a key point where the east-west and north-south roads intersected.
In this way , Uenaegi is an extreamly interesting erea from the histrical point of view and Kagetomo Toyama , who became an owner of Iwamura Castle , set up castles in various places. It is said that Koeji Castle was built in this area around 1333 as a protection for the area on the north bank of the Kiso River.
The Toyama clan was upset by the Toki clan being involved in the Onin War , so they set up various castles for their own defense . Koeji Castle was also moved to Takamori (Naegi , Nakatsugawa City) around 1526 , when Takamori was selected as a more favorable terrain.
